The Texas Tubman Travel Initiative was the working model that supported women forced to leave Texas to receive abortion care. Through coordinated flights, logistics, and personal support, the initiative helped more than 400 women travel to New Mexico for the care they wanted. It demonstrated that abortion travel could be organized with dignity, structure, and real human care.
The women who participated in the program were known as Freedom Flyers. They were women who chose to travel out of their home state to receive abortion care and who experienced a model designed around care, connection, and support rather than chaos and isolation.
After years of operating as a direct travel model, the work revealed something larger. The initiative proved that structured reproductive care travel could work. The next step became codifying that model so it could expand beyond one location and become a framework others could learn from and carry forward.
Tubman Travel Champions are those being trained to lead and steward this model. Champions carry the Tubman approach into the world by helping guide Freedom Flyers, building local networks of care, and ensuring the principles of dignity, support, and coordination remain at the center of reproductive freedom travel.
The Tubman vision is now focused on building a broader framework that can expand reproductive freedom travel beyond a single initiative. The work is centered on training, leadership development, and the creation of a network capable of supporting women who choose to travel for care.
What began as a single initiative has become the foundation for something larger. The Tubman model is now evolving into a structure that prepares women to lead, support Freedom Flyers, and build a system of care designed to endure beyond any one place or moment in time.
