Since 2021, following the Texas Heartbeat Act (Senate Bill 8), Rev. Erika Ferguson, the founder of The Tubman Travel Project, has been dedicated to supporting those traveling to New Mexico for abortion care.
In April 2024, our project was honored to receive a grant from The Society of Family Planning to gather research and study the impact of travel for reproductive healthcare. Through the development of this study, we have established our commitment to using data and research to inform and enhance our work. We understand the critical importance of gathering accurate, evidence-based insights to amplify our efforts in building the reproductive movement for the future. It is our intention to continue driving meaningful change in the accessibility of travel for abortion care.
Additionally, through our findings, we are empowered to further examine the challenges faced by individuals seeking abortion services outside their state of residence, particularly in the wake of restrictive abortion laws. By combining direct accompaniment with comprehensive research, we aim to provide valuable insights that not only improve travel for reproductive abortion care but also shape the narrative for lasting cultural change in service delivery.
This grant enables us to continue our efforts to influence and inform the global conversation around reproductive rights.
